CONTESTS
Objects in Motion
Started on: July 1st, 2011 Ended on: August 30th, 2011
Shooting ‘objects in motion’ and making them appear flying, or speeding, requires skill or perhaps high quality photo editing software, or both. Blurry backgrounds or light trails streaming behind a subject tell viewers that the object is really moving fast… But how is this accomplished?
Modern digital cameras freeze objects in motion. The fastest things you can imagine are too slow for your camera, and they usually appear quite stationary in the frame. Good photographers know that to make things appear to be going fast requires a whole different skill set. Show us objects in motion and let us all marvel at your ability to manipulate matter and physics.
To freeze an airplane, landing on the runway, and yet slightly blur the background requires a slower shutter speed, and a slight panning movement of your lens following the object. It also requires patience and lots of practice. The opposite effect occurs in long exposures when you hold the camera still - things in motion become blurred while the background remains in focus. In both cases the effects can be breathtaking, and these types of pictures are commonly used to suggest movement.
