PRIZE

A counting exercise for Lenzr from Toronto

Counting exercises appear all around us, and some people see them everywhere. Some folks are hardwired to count things. A stack of cement pipes lying by the side of the highway will be counted over and over again by passing motorists many thousands of times a day. Such people can’t help it.

Visual statistical distractions have been around forever. How many gumballs are in that jar? How many oars does the galley ship have? on both sides? How many paving stones on the walkway? Do you remember in the movie Rain Man when Tom Cruise dropped the toothpicks and Dustin Hoffman counted them before they hit the ground? Rain Man had autism and was disabled by being super-enabled to perform rapid counting exercises. But to some extent we all have this affliction – please give us something to count.

What have you got around you now? Is there something visual you’re always adding up in your head? Maybe it’s the number of blossoms on a nearby fruit tree? or the number of sailboats in the harbour? Or maybe it’s the number of bubbles in the plastic wrap that’s covering your ex girlfriend’s furniture? Tell us all why your picture is the best counting exercise in the contest index and leave clues as to what you believe is the correct answer to 'the count' in the comments. Read more in the Lenzr blog. Sponsored by some web savvy Toronto accountants, the prize is a Sony Laptop which makes a counting things easy.

HOW IT WORKS - Upload your photo now, using the Enter Contest button to the left. This contest has a ten day Voting Period that begins July 15th and ends July 25th. During that time, other members and visitors to the site will be prompted to rate the pictures. The Top Ten photos advance to Lenzr Judges on July 25th. The winner is selected based on the eight judges' preferences. Judges' comments are often published in the Lenzr blog. The winner is announced in the Lenzr Blog on or before August 1st 2011. Good Luck! Contest open to all Canadians excluding Quebec -13 yrs or older.

It is a shame that three or four members are dominating the Top Ten, when there are SO MANY great pictures in this contest. We will take action in the future to prevent this vote oligarchy from occurring - that being said I like all of the pictures in the Top Ten and I must congratulate Silversurfer and Pete for being so imaginative and prolific and in no way diminish their achievements here - i just saying look out for more innovation in the voting before you fume with indignation ... we're evolving

I agree with the above statement, all the photos that made it to the Top 10 are worthy of being there. However it clearly shows that some members have an unfair advantage of a huge base of followers that regularly vote their photos into the the Top 10.

Some suggestions are:
- Limited the number of entries per person
- Maybe if you win a competition you should sit one out
- Add a number of wildcards to the mix. In addition to the top 10 voted in by us let the judges also add 10 wildcards that are entirely up to their descrection. The winner is then selected from the 20 photos that made it to the final.

This is a great website. Don't let people become discouraged to enter because the same few people win everytime

I think if members votes counted separately, one vote per, it would be chosen by your peers. then maybe have the top ten consist of top five member's votes, top five overall votes ....

There seems to be a serious bug with the voting software. When you select the first photo and use the "next" button to move to the other photos, it skips over many of the entries. If you look at all the entries with zero votes, you will discover they never get displayed for voting...

I also found that sometimes you have to click multiple times before a vote would register.

In the past two years there have been 50 contests and the total record # of wins by one member is only three, I believe
Mommakoala and Seattle Dredge, Slimmswitch and ... are the most victorious members

We're looking into the voting issues. Its possible some pictures don't get displayed as often in the line-up but I'm pretty sure they all get displayed - the bug has never come up before in any of our testing, but then, we didnt test with that many pictures.

A Counting Exercise sets a record btw - 152 pictures, but # votes is actually down from average last year and thats because the voting system is humping - its just not as fun. Maybe we need to add a cool sound effect? And words POOR - GREAT at the ends of the number scale. ??

I think Lenzr has done a great job of trying to make their contests as fair as possible. The first Lenzr contest I ever entered was almost a yr ago and I didn't enter another one until this group of contests. My first experience with a Lenzr contest there was so much cheating that it was discouraging for the other entrants. I watched as some contestants received as many as 300 votes in a single hour and at the end of 2 days had more votes for their entry than the combined votes for all the entrants here. Having the pictures judged in the end has put an end to the cheating and an end to ppl entering poor quality pictures and getting the most votes just because they have more friends on facebook. I would like to see a limit to the amount of pictures entered by one contestant per category as I think it would make it more fun as we would have more contestants in the top 10.

Cndlady. Thanks for your participation and kind words. YES - we are working on that 'limiting' innovation but it will take a bit of programming to connive a limiter mechanism that knows when a user already has a top ten picture and what to do when that happens.
