I've just published a PAGE on the Lenzr blog, How To Get Votes?
There are five ways to promote pictures and attract votes,
1) EMAIL your family and friends
2) FACEBOOK requests from family and friends - seek out vote exchange groups
3) TWITTER requires that you have a large network of engaged followers.
4) CONTEST FORUMS. There are several discussion forums wherein you may ask for votes, in exchange for your willingness to help others and vote for their entries in similar challenges.

I have to agree, I don't think that getting your friends and family to vote for your photo is right. I honestly think the voting should only be allowed by members who have submitted a photo or given to an impartial yet informed judge(s) to decide, otherwise it just becomes another popularity contest.

I also agree with this and all of you to some extent. You're not out there selling the contests, so you dont know how attractive the 'spreading the message' part is to sponsors
and in my experience, having watched over 63 of these things unfold now, it doesnt take much to get into the Top 10 if you have a great photo already. I have seen the best pictures rise on their own, and win. Once you're in the top ten with a great photo you have a very good chance of winning.
but i will concede the top 10 generally contains some of the worst pictures, and thats deflating
IN the future there will be contests laid out with different endgame scenarios, some will be top 10 and some will have more judges and some less and celebrity judges select images from the entire body of submissions is an option im willing to consider for some blue chip / VIP sponsor. It will be the last item on a custom menu for making your photo contest the way you want it. I will save it for a contest about baseball or something generic
